Adequate Insurance Against Fire And Water Damage

No homeowner ever expects to have their home damaged or destroyed by fires or flooding, yet it happens all the time. It is common knowledge that having insurance to protect you in the event of these things is essential. If you have a mortgage on your home, the company you have your home financed with requires that the home be covered for what it is appraised for. This is good enough for the mortgage company, but do you have enough insurance to cover your personal belongings as well?

Coverage for personal effects in a home owner policy is usually standard, but the amount you are covered for is not. It is up to you to make sure there will be an insurance pay off large enough to replace all the valuable things in your house. Even if you had adequate coverage for personal things when you bought your policy, it needs to be updated every so often to make sure new purchases are added.

The best way to make sure you have enough coverage for personal things is to go through your home and either video tape or photograph all your valuables. You might wish to have your insurance agent present while you do this so there is no question about it later if you need to make a claim. Serious floods or fire can destroy many or all of your stuff and it would be sad to not get a check big enough to set up house keeping the way you were accustomed to.

While you are taking the video or photographs, it is a good idea to have the serial and model numbers of items visible if they have them. This can help you in recovering these items if your home is ever burglarized. All valuable things in your home should be taken into account. Here are some important things that should be videoed or photographed:

1] Family heirlooms
2] Jewelry items
3] Electronics, movies, games, and appliances
4] Furniture, rugs, draperies, bedding and linens
5] Pictures, novelties, dishes, cookware
6] Clothing, shoes

These are the most common things that must be replaced, but every home and the things in them are different. You need to make sure that everything you might have to replace is accounted for. Even if a fire or flood does not happen, burglary might and thieves are likely to take all sorts of things. Theft is also covered in your insurance so a video or photographs will help when making a claim for this as well.

Fire Safety In The Forest

For many of us, we grew up being taught at school and watching television commercials about Smokey the Bear. He is the role model that we used to learn about fire safety in the forest and other places. We probably did not give as much thought to the importance of what he was saying as we should have then, but you can bet that many people who have had their homes burned down because of out of control forest fires do now.

Homes are only one thing that is destroyed when people are careless with fires in the woods. It can be a simple accident or a lack of taking the proper precautions when they are camping or just cooking out in a park or other outdoor area. There are even certain individuals who enjoy setting forest fires deliberately. There is no understandable reason why anyone would do this other than some emotional disturbance.

The forest fires that are started innocently can usually be avoided if people remember to use certain safety measures before they start a fire:

1} If there is a lot of wind, try not to build a fire if it can be avoided.
2} Be sure the area is cleared so the fire can be contained. There should be no bushes, brush, or any flammable liquid or other materials near the spot.
3} Keep some water nearby to extinguish the fire with. A rake or shovel can also help to get a fire out quickly if it is small enough.
4] Do not leave a fire unattended at any time whether you are in a forest setting or burning brush at home.
5} When there has been extremely dry weather, it is not a good idea to build a fire out doors unless it is absolutely necessary.
6} Always make sure a fire is completely out with no coals or embers still burning before you leave the area.

If you try your best to follow these rules when you build a fire out doors, you should not have any problems. We should realize how destructive an out of control forest fire can become. Forest fires are not always started by humans because Mother Nature plays her part sometimes too, but would you not hate to know that you inadvertently caused a forest fire that caused millions of dollars in damage to the forest and the property of other people.
